Multi-core processing is a disruptive technology. Network packets can be processed much more efficiently with multi-core systems, but only if software is carefully optimized.Existing networking stacks will not perform well in multi-core environments; a new paradigm is needed to harness the potential of multi-core networking. Expertise is required in processor device programming, operating systems internals, and networking internals. Remember, two out of three isn’t good enough.
Today multi-core packet processing is utilized in edge, aggregation, and core devices where multi-gigabit performance is required. But multi-core packet processing promises to bring performance enhancements to the entire range of networking devices, from the core to end user.
